It’s obvious that after working out, the gym apparel that you’re wearing is going to smell pretty unpleasant! It’s from the bacteria and skin cells that create those odors. However, that is not the only culprit. Surprise, there is sebum too!
What is Sebum?
Sebum is the sticky wax like fat that settles into the fibers of the clothes that you work out in; resulting in stains and creating odors. This is why it’s helpful to know how to properly remove these stains.
Here are a few tips that may guide you:
1. Getting rid of dirt or sweat lingering on your apparel
Soaking your workout apparel in white distilled vinegar may sound odd but it’s efficient when it comes down to breaking down dirt or sweat in those performance fabrics. Vinegar is sold everywhere so it’s simple to soak it for a few minutes so the acidity of it can soak through the body oil and release the odor and bacteria lingering on the apparel.
2. Wash Workout Apparel in cold water only!
Washing your clothes in water prevents shrinkage, meaning it breaks down the synthetic fabric which is what you want to avoid. Your washing machine should be set to a delicate cycle and cold water to help maintain the apparel’s shape and will just last longer.
3. Skip the dryer and air dry it!
The heat from the dryer alters the shape and also causes the breakage of the fabric. When exposing your activewear to the dryer, it releases heat and friction which can damage the fabric. The heat and friction will cause the clothes to tear and create holes more easily because the elastic fibers have worn out. It’s best to just fold it and leave in on a hanger in the washroom for a day or two.
